Play (Inside) Ottawa

A couple of months ago, I was in Ottawa for an intense course. So I wasn't able to enjoy much of the city's food scene.

The bitterly cold -40 degree weather certainly didn't encourage exploration beyond the comforts of our confine. And when it hits -40, one does not need to state Celsius or Fahrenheit anymore, either way it's equally frigid.

Fortunately, one of the restaurants featured in Ottawa Magazine's list of Top Ten Restaurants 2010 was right across the street from our historic hotel, the Chateau Laurier.

Food and Wine is located at 1 York Street in Ottawa's ByWard Market. It is a new venture by the guys behind famed fine-dining fixture, Beckta.

It's upscale yet casual. The focus is on small plates with an aim to pair perfectly with the wine list.

At lunch, one can take advantage of the special: 2 plates for $20.

The mixed charcuterie plate was a hit. The other savoury small plates, on the other hand, left something to be desired.

Until next time, Ottawa!
