Our hotel was within steps of Little Italy so we ventured off into the sunset to find a taste of Italia.
We found this modern little gem of a restaurant, Bencotto Italian Kitchen at 750 W Fir Street. From their website, “Bencotto” means and refers to a meal “done well,” or perfectly cooked.
Here's a video of the owner, Guido Nistri demonstrating the different types of la pasta fresca (fresh pasta)- la pasta fatta a mano (daily hand-made) for a smooth consistency; or la pasta artigianale (artisanal) for an “al dente” texture- and how to properly slice prosciutto.
Guido was a very pleasant host and the pasta lived up to its claim of "best in town."
On our way home from dinner, we walked by a beautiful dessert place called Karen Krasne's Extraordinary Desserts located at 1430 Union Street.
We were too full from all the wonderful fresh pasta, so we came back a few days later for brunch. Highly recommended.
The desserts were... well, let's just say the place is aptly named.
Buon appetito!
Sunset in San Diego
Bencotto
Menu
Balsamic vinegar in velvety “Bencotto” supertuscan extra virgin olive oil
Calamari In Umido- sauteed in white wine, garlic tomato sauce; garlic bread crouton
The pasta special of the night: Tagliatelle Nere Al Gambheri- handmade black squid-ink fettuccine; spicy pink shrimp sauce. Just like on the cover of San Diego Magazine, when Bencotto was featured as one of the city's best restaurants of 2010.
